WHEN HARRY MET SALLY

When Harry Met Sally… is a 1989 American romantic comedy film directed by Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron. Starring Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan, Carrie Fisher, and Bruno Kirby, it follows the title characters from the time they meet in Chicago and share a drive to New York City through twelve years of chance encounters in New York, and addresses the question “Can men and women ever just be friends?”

Ideas for the film began when Reiner and Penny Marshall divorced. An interview Ephron conducted with Reiner provided the basis for Harry; Sally was based on Ephron and some of her friends. Crystal came on board and made his own contributions to the screenplay. Ephron supplied the structure of the film with much of the dialogue based on the real-life friendship between Reiner and Crystal. The soundtrack consists of standards from Harry Connick Jr., with a big band and orchestra arranged by Marc Shaiman. For his work on the soundtrack, Connick won his first Grammy Award for Best Jazz Male Vocal Performance.

Columbia Pictures released When Harry Met Sally in selected cities, letting word of mouth generate interest, before gradually expanding distribution. The film grossed $92.8 million in North America, and was released to critical acclaim. Ephron received the BAFTA Award for Best Original Screenplay, as well as nominations for the Academy Award, WGA Award and Golden Globe. The film is ranked 23rd on AFI’s 100 Years… 100 Laughs list of the top comedy films in American cinema and number 60 on Bravo’s “100 Funniest Movies”. In early 2004, the film was adapted for the stage in a production starring Luke Perry and Alyson Hannigan. In 2022, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.[1]

KNIVES OUT

Knives Out is a 2019 American mystery film written and directed by Rian Johnson. The film’s eleven-actor ensemble cast is led by Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, a famed private detective who is summoned to investigate the death of a bestselling author (Christopher Plummer). Police think his death is a suicide but Blanc suspects foul play and investigates to ascertain the true cause of it. Johnson produced Knives Out with his longtime collaborator Ram Bergman. Funding came from MRC and tax subsidies from the Massachusetts state government.

Johnson conceived Knives Out in the mid-2000s. Wanting to create work reminiscent of whodunnit films of the mid-20th century, the director was influenced by his interest in film adaptations of Agatha Christie’s stories. Development of Knives Out continued after Johnson finished filming Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). He wrote the screenplay in six to seven months. Principal photography on Knives Out began in October 2018 on a $40 million budget and ended that December. Location filming took place in suburban Boston. Nathan Johnson composed the film’s classical score, which was inspired by his and Rian’s favorite symphonic film scores. Knives Out has been read as a work that investigates class warfare, wealth inequality, immigration, and race in contemporary American society.

Knives Out premiered at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2019, and was distributed by Lionsgate to American theaters on November 27. It was a critical and commercial success; the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute chose it as one of the year’s top films, and it grossed $312 million. Knives Out received positive reviews from critics, who praised the plot and actors but occasionally criticized aspects of the writing and performances. It was nominated for multiple awards, including three Golden Globes, a British Academy Film Award, and an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Knives Out is the first entry of a series of films that also includes Glass Onion (2022) and Wake Up Dead Man (2025).

SEPTEMBER 30, 1955

On the evening of September 30, 1955 in Conway, Arkansas, college student Jimmy J. watches the film East of Eden alone in a theater. The next day at football practice, he hears that the film’s star, James Dean, was killed in a road accident in California around the same time that Jimmy J. was viewing the film. He runs to the local radio station, desperate to learn the details. The radio disk jockey, while reading the morning news on-air, makes a brief announcement of James Dean’s death.

Jimmy J. calls his friend Billie Jean Turner, a working-class girl who also admires Dean. Jimmy J. takes his girlfriend Charlotte Smith, his roommate Hanley and another college couple, Frank and his girlfriend Pat, off-campus in Jimmy J’s car. They buy some food at a local grocery store and Jimmy J. steals some liquor. They have a party on the banks of Arkansas River, where Jimmy J. grows upset that his friends do not understand the depth of his grief. When Frank belittles Jimmy J. for caring so much about someone whom he has never met, Jimmy J. explains that he has seen East of Eden four times, and that the absent Billie Jean has seen it 22 times, and they have been anticipating the release of Dean’s Rebel Without a Cause later that month.

Jimmy J. sculpts an Academy Award statuette out of mud, strips to his underwear, covers himself in dirt and wet sand, and conducts a ceremony to summon Dean’s spirit. He perceives a dog barking in the distance as a sign. The police arrive, but the group escapes back to town, where Frank and Pat tell Jimmy J. that he is disturbed. Charlotte agrees to let Jimmy J. continue the séance at her house later.

Returning to his dormitory, Jimmy J. is surprised that his mother, little brother Dickie and aunt Ethel have come to take him to a movie. His mother is disappointed by his dirty appearance and worries that he will end up a loser like his estranged father. Jimmy J. calls Billie Jean and invites her to Charlotte’s house that evening for the séance. Coach Haynes arrives at the dorm to confront Jimmy J., disciplining him for leaving football practice that morning.

Fellow student Eugene joins Jimmy J. and Hanley as they leave the campus once again, and they stop to pick up Billie Jean, finding her dressed like the character Vampira (a real-life paramour of James Dean), wearing heavy makeup and a black cape. She attempts to seduce Jimmy J., but he rebuffs her. At Charlotte’s house, Billie Jean darkens the room, lights candles and clears the furniture. When Charlotte and Jimmy J. are alone, she confronts him about Billie Jean, but he states that, though he is untrustworthy like his father, he has not had sex with Billie Jean. When the group uses a Ouija board to contact Dean, only Jimmy J. and Billie Jean feel his presence.

That night, the group wreaks havoc at the local cemetery, but when the police arrive, Billie Jean drops a candelabrum and her cape catches on fire, leaving her badly burned.

Three weeks later at the homecoming parade, Jimmy J. arrives on a motorcycle, sees Charlotte riding a float and climbs aboard to speak with her. He confronts her for breaking up with him, kisses her, and climbs down. Hanley spots Jimmy J. and greets him warmly as Frank and Pat ride past in the parade, with Frank yelling that he thought that Jimmy J. had been kicked out of school. Eugene is also at the parade as part of the marching band and waves to Jimmy J.

Jimmy J. visits Billie Jean, who is home from the hospital and has not spoken since the accident. She is nearly covered in bandages. Jimmy J. confesses that he went to see Rebel Without a Cause the previous night, watching it four times so that he could tell her all the details. He recounts how the movie parallels his own life and explains that he is responsible for Billie Jean’s injuries in the same way that Dean’s character Jim Stark is responsible for Sal Mineo‘s character Plato Crawford’s death. He asks her forgiveness, as he is leaving for California to visit the spot where Dean died, and begs her to speak, since her mother, Melba Lou, has expressed her intentions to send her to a sanitorium for electroshock treatment in the hope of ending her muteness. Speaking for the first time, Billie Jean yells at him to “stop it,” begs not to be sent to the sanitorium, and demands that he shatter her mirrors so that she cannot see her scarred body. He obliges her and breaks the mirrors. Melba Lou enters, sees the damaged furniture, and upon hearing Billie Jean’s cries not to be committed, gets mad that Jimmy J. has revealed her intentions, and joins her daughter in telling Jimmy J. that life is not a movie. Jimmy J. leaves.

Watching the homecoming football game from a distance, Jimmy J. watches Charlotte’s coronation as football queen. He then rides off on his motorcycle, headed to California.

Love Story proved a pop culture sensation of the 1970s, spawning several imitations, parodies, and homages, and is credited with having re-energized the cinematic melodrama in Hollywood. A sequel film, Oliver’s Story, followed in 1978. The film is considered one of the most romantic by the American Film Institute (No. 9 on the list) and is one of the highest-grossing films of all time adjusted for inflation.[5]

The cast includes Mia Farrow, Sam Waterston, Dianne Wiest, Elaine Stritch, Jack Warden, and Denholm Elliott.

NATIONAL LAMPOON’S ANIMAL HOUSE

National Lampoon’s Animal House is a 1978 American comedy film directed by John Landis and written by Harold Ramis, Douglas Kenney and Chris Miller. It stars John Belushi, Tim Matheson, John Vernon, Verna Bloom, Thomas Hulce and Donald Sutherland. The film is about a trouble-making fraternity whose members challenge the authority of Dean Vernon Wormer of the fictional Faber College.

Produced by Matty Simmons of National Lampoon and Ivan Reitman for Universal Pictures, it was inspired by stories written by Miller and published in National Lampoon, which were based on Ramis’s experience in the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity at Washington University in St. Louis, Miller’s Alpha Delta Phi experiences at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire and producer Reitman’s at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Of the younger lead actors, only the 28-year-old Belushi was an established star but even he had not yet appeared in a film, having gained fame as an original cast member of Saturday Night Live, which was in its third season in the autumn of 1977. Several of the actors cast as college students, including Thomas Hulce, Karen Allen and Kevin Bacon, were just beginning their film careers. Matheson, also cast as student Eric “Otter” Stratton, was already a seasoned actor, having appeared in movies and television since the age of 13.

Filming took place at the University of Oregon[5] from October to December 1977. Following its initial release on July 28, 1978, Animal House received generally mixed reviews from critics, but Time and Roger Ebert proclaimed it one of the year’s best. Filmed for only $3 million, it garnered an estimated gross of more than $141 million in the form of theatrical rentals and home video, not including merchandising, making it the highest-grossing comedy film of its time.[4][6]

The film, along with 1977’s The Kentucky Fried Movie, also directed by Landis, was largely responsible for defining and launching the gross-out film genre, which became one of Hollywood’s staples.[7] Animal House is now regarded as one of the best comedy films of all time.[8][9][10][11]

In 2001, the United States Library of Congress deemed National Lampoon’s Animal House “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry. It was No. 1 on Bravo’s “100 Funniest Movies”. It was No. 36 on AFI‘s “100 Years… 100 Laughs” list of the 100 best American comedies. In 2008, Empire magazine selected it as No. 279 of “The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time”.

PRIDE & PREJUDICE

Version 1.0.0

Pride & Prejudice is a 2005 period romance film directed by Joe Wright, in his feature directorial debut, based on Jane Austen‘s 1813 novel of the same name. The film features five sisters from an English family of landed gentry as they deal with issues of marriage, morality, and misconceptions. Keira Knightley stars as Elizabeth Bennet, while Matthew Macfadyen plays Mr Darcy, who falls in love with her.

Screenwriter Deborah Moggach initially attempted to make her script as faithful to the novel as possible, writing from Elizabeth’s perspective while preserving much of the original dialogue. Wright encouraged greater deviation from the text, including changing the Bennet family dynamics. Wright and Moggach set the film in an earlier period and avoided depicting a “perfectly clean Regency world”, presenting instead a “muddy hem version” of the time. It was shot entirely on location in England on an 11-week schedule.[5][6] Wright found casting difficult due to past performances of particular characters. The filmmakers had to balance who they thought was best for each role with the studio’s desire for stars. Knightley was well known in part from her role in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, while Macfadyen had no international name recognition.

Produced by Working Title Films in association with StudioCanal, Pride & Prejudice was released on 16 September 2005 in the United Kingdom and on 11 November in the United States. The film’s themes emphasise realism, romanticism and family. It was marketed to a younger, mainstream audience; promotional items noted that it came from the producers of 2001’s romantic comedy Bridget Jones’s Diary before acknowledging its provenance as an Austen novel. Austen scholars opined that Wright’s work created a new hybrid genre by blending traditional traits of the heritage film with “youth-oriented filmmaking techniques”.[7]

Pride & Prejudice was successful at the box office, grossing $131.9 million worldwide on a $28 million budget. It received positive reviews from critics, with praise for Knightley’s performance. It received four nominations at the 78th Academy Awards, including Best Actress for the 20-year-old Knightley, making her the third-youngest Best Actress nominee at the time.[8][9] The film received other accolades, including the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Wright.

JULIE & JULIA

Julie & Julia is a 2009 American biographical comedy drama film written and directed by Nora Ephron starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams in the title roles with Stanley Tucci, Chris Messina, and Linda Emond in supporting roles. The film contrasts the life of chef Julia Child (played by Streep) in the early years of her culinary career with the life of young New Yorker Julie Powell (played by Adams), who aspires to cook all 524 recipes in Child’s cookbook in 365 days, a challenge she described on her popular blog, which made her a published author.[2]

Ephron’s screenplay is based on two books: My Life in France, Child’s autobiography written with Alex Prud’homme, and a memoir by Powell, Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen (later retitled Julie & Julia: My Year of Cooking Dangerously). Both of these books were written and published between 2004 and 2006. Powell’s book was based on her blog The Julie/Julia Project,[3] where she documented online her daily experiences cooking each of the 524 recipes in Child’s 1961 cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. The film is the first major motion picture based on a blog.

In March 2008, Ephron began filming with Streep as Child and Adams as Powell. On July 30, 2009, the film officially premiered at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York;[4] and, on August 7, 2009, it opened throughout North America.[1] It received positive reviews from critics, who praised Streep’s performance.

GOSFORD PARK

Gosford Park is a 2001 satirical black comedy mystery film directed by Robert Altman and written by Julian Fellowes. The film, which is influenced by Jean Renoir‘s French classic The Rules of the Game,[3] follows a party of wealthy Britons plus an American film producer, and their servants, who in 1932 gather for a shooting weekend at Gosford Park, an English country house. A murder occurs after a dinner party, and the film goes on to present the subsequent investigation from the servants’ and guests’ perspectives.

Co-produced in the United Kingdom, the United States and Italy, the film has an ensemble cast including Eileen Atkins, Bob Balaban, Alan Bates, Charles Dance, Stephen Fry, Michael Gambon, Richard E. Grant, Derek Jacobi, Kelly Macdonald, Helen Mirren, Jeremy Northam, Clive Owen, Ryan Phillippe, Maggie Smith, Kristin Scott Thomas and Emily Watson.

Development on Gosford Park began in 1999, when Bob Balaban asked Altman if they could develop a film together. Balaban suggested an Agatha Christie–style whodunit and introduced Altman to Julian Fellowes, with whom Balaban had been working on a different project. The film went into production in March 2001, and began filming at Shepperton Studios with a production budget of $19.8 million. Gosford Park premiered on 7 November 2001 at the London Film Festival. It received a limited release across cinemas in the United States in December 2001, before being widely released in January 2002 by USA Films. It was released in February 2002 in the United Kingdom.

The film was successful at the box office, grossing over $87 million in cinemas worldwide, making it Altman’s second-most successful film after M*A*S*H. Widely acclaimed by critics, Gosford Park was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for both Mirren and Smith, and won Best Original Screenplay; it was also nominated for nine British Academy Film Awards, winning two.

The TV series Downton Abbey – written and created by Fellowes – was originally planned as a spin-off of Gosford Park, but instead was developed as a standalone property inspired by the film, and set earlier in the 20th century (from 1912 to the mid-1920s).[4]

E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (or simply E.T.) is a 1982 American science fantasy film produced and directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison. It tells the story of Elliott, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial that he names E.T. who has been stranded on Earth. Along with his friends and family, Elliott must find a way to help E.T. find his way home. The film stars Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore.

The film’s concept was based on an imaginary friend that Spielberg created after his parents’ divorce. In 1980, Spielberg met Mathison and developed a new story from the unrealized project Night Skies. In less than two months, Mathison wrote the first draft of the script, titled E.T. and Me, which went through two rewrites. The project was rejected by Columbia Pictures, who doubted its commercial potential. Universal Pictures eventually purchased the script for $1 million. Filming took place from September to December 1981 on a budget of $10.5 million. Unlike most films, E.T. was shot in rough chronological order to facilitate convincing emotional performances from the young cast. The animatronics for the film were designed by Carlo Rambaldi.

E.T. premiered as the closing film of the Cannes Film Festival on May 26, 1982, and was released in the United States on June 11. The film was a smash hit at the box office, surpassing Star Wars (1977) to become the highest-grossing film of all time, a record it held for eleven years until Spielberg’s own Jurassic Park surpassed it in 1993. E.T. received universal acclaim from critics, and is regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. It received nine nominations at the 55th Academy Awards, winning Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing in addition to being nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. It also won five Saturn Awards and two Golden Globe Awards. The film was re-released in 1985 and again in 2002 to celebrate its 20th anniversary, with altered shots, visual effects, and additional scenes. It was also re-released in IMAX on August 12, 2022, to celebrate its 40th anniversary. In 1994, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, who deemed it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Filming for The Houses October Built partially took place at several haunted house attractions,[3] which Roe would later include in a list of “America’s Scariest Haunted Houses” that he released as marketing material for the film.[4] The film was given a limited theatrical release on October 10, 2014, and was released to home video on January 6, 2015.[5][6]

A sequel, The Houses October Built 2, also directed by Roe and reprising some of the original cast, was released in September 2017.
